Schumann/Liszt: Widmung – Argerich, Piano

Widmung Op. 25 No. 1 is the first song in Myrthen, a song cycles (26 songs) written by Robert Schumann in 1840, the year he married Friedrich Wieck’s daughter Clara, against the wishes of her father, following a long and acrimonious legal battle, which found in favor of Clara and Robert. In fact, Myrthen was a secret wedding gift for Clara Wieck. This piece was later arranged for piano solo by Franz Liszt. Myrthen was dedicated to Clara Wieck as a wedding gift, as he finally married Clara in September, despite the opposition from Clara’s father. – Martha Argerich
